No, you should keep hosting as long as you want to.

22. Beat a fighting game

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

World of Light mode. That was a lot longer than I was expecting. It got a little repetitive, but it's Smash. I could probably play it forever and not get bored. Ended up with ~90% completion. Only need to find Richter to have all the characters unlocked in it.

17/50

@TheArkOfTurus

Noticed looking over lists that you put your Smash Ultimate in my list. As much as I would love that to be true (and that I could play Smash and had a Switch and ohmagerdiwantitsobad), I moved it to your 11. Beat a game by a developer you like. Feel free to move it about (or send me your copy of Switch and Smash so I can beat, kthx ^_^)

Throwing in some more cheap wins for padding a second list. Thinking about playing some better games to push out some of the fodder like Three Goblets and Ringside Hero? I'm honestly lost, wanting to play games but without the goals this challenge gave me, lol.

5. Brave Shorties 2
15. Where Are My Pets?
21. Stop the Darkness
35. Gragyriss, Captor of Princesses
36. The Enchanted Cave
39. The Idiot Test

Hopes to Paste Over:
1. Pre-1990's Alter Ego
4. 2010-2017's Dead Maze
5. 2018's Three Goblets
21. Strategy's Kingdom Rush Frontiers
22. Fighting's Ringside Hero
39. One day's Candy Box 2

Moved Final Fantasy X from 37. Backlog to 24. Romance

Alternatively, I was considering Terranigma to Historical (it has Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell), and Dynasty Warriors 8 to Romance (of the Three Kingdoms).

37. Beat a game that's been in your backlog for a long time

Tecmo Secret of the Stars: A Fantasy

- Took 20+ years, but the game I rented from my rental store at least thrice a year until I bought it when they went out of business is FINALLY beated. I have a lot of history with this game. Though Secret of Mana was my first RPG, this was my first classical turn-based fare so I have great nostalgia for this turd. I can't believe it was released stateside in 1995. It blows my mind that not only was this NES-looking RPG released after the Final Fantasies and at the same time as Secret of Evermore, but it took two years to translate. No, seriously, it's unbelievable that the two years between JP and NA releases had more than a few weeks devoted to translation.

But still, despite a rather uninspired story, high encounter rate, stiff boss battles, an extremely underwhelming translation, graphics that would look much more at home on the NES outside of battle, and a slew of guide-needed things to do (the GoldPin, getting Fireworks, learning what half the items even actually do)... I still had a load of fun. Part of it is definitely nostalgia, another is doing the Battle Chasers playstyle of having Critical Role playing on the side (five or six episodes thanks to this game!). But I genuinely enjoyed a lot of the things it tries to do. I still love building up the town and finding people to populate it. I enjoy recruiting Kustera and playing around with my second team. The random crazy shenanigans are still hilarious like a town that was turned to dogs by a crime boss called Bad-Bad or saving a party member from the circus but he's been turned into gold statue of a lion when you finally rescue him or disguising my boys in bunny suits so they could sneak into an all-female town.

I also still love the monster designs, even with a lot of colorswaps, and the music is good despite being very short loops (sailing is awesome). I had a really good time with it, more than I really expected. Of the two classic SNES games I played a lot of but never finished, I was much more impressed with Tecmo's RPG than the Illusion of Gaia sequel. The game got even weirder than expected after I passed where I last left off (more in a moment) with the entire town getting overrun by displaced *******s then kicked out by kids THEN TURNED INTO A FLYING UFO CITY THAT GOES INTO A VOLCANO and loved the final boss dungeon. Like, that endgame with Kustera and Aquatallion working together was what I wanted more of from the outset and I was so happy to have it.

Fun story. Last week I was fiddling around with cables on my TV and noticed an old ANT/CBL screw-in port and realized I could hook my SNES up! I was much excite, and considering I had one final game to play, I wanted to make it something I never beat. I think this was my only SNES game I never actually finished and made it my mission to make this my game 52 (sorry Trails of Cold Steel and Stardew Valley). Hooked up my SNES, put in the cart, and voila!

I went to start from an old file, and holy crap. It was very weird seeing characters renamed to my AOL Chatroom Red Dragon Inn friends, and my secondary team named after zones in EverQuest. The file must've been from 1998-2000. Huuuge nostalgia rush. I played for a few hours, and went back to it the next day, but my SNES wouldn't turn on. It died after ten years on the shelf. It died playing probably the worst game I own. I think the system was so excited to be played again only to realize it was to play this game then committed seppuku out of shame and despair. My poor SNES.

Still, had a wonderful experience, but I'm glad it's over.

Moved The Witcher from 3. 00's to 28. Supernatural

3. Beat a game released between 2000-2009

Batman: Arkham Asylum

- Wow. Those were some hilariously godawful end credits. I was laughing by the fifth time there was a repeat storyboard not even two minutes into the zoom in, zoom out mess. Especially since some of those pictures are the hilarious Batman punching the sky scream and Batman high kick zoom straight into crotch.

Also, I'm guessing this was by the same or similar teams as Deus Ex: Human Revolution? It hits a lot of the same beats with excellent exploration, great henchmen dialogue, cool gadgets and stealth sections, and absolutely abysmal boss sections. Aside from Poison Ivy, the bosses were nearly all terrible. It was either big guy runs into walls, fight lots of badguys then hit the boss once, or fight lots of badguys while big guy runs into walls.

Detective Mode is also broken as hell. The only downside to using it 95% of the game is missing out on the visuals, but honestly the sedate blues and oranges felt better than the blooming reds and greens.

Overall very fun. Dated as tons of games have taken and expanded on the Arkham Asylum formula since, but still holds up. Honestly, it began to feel like a really cool 3D '90s action beat em up with how little enemy variation there was. It felt like stages of a Simpsons/TMNT/XMen arcade style game when it came to slugfests.

Only one more game to go...

would you endure all of that pain and misery if it meant you could return to those peaceful days in the club room again?

Peaceful club room days? *remembers the marker and the dress up and the cat ears*

Notes:
- Went back and restarted Ch.2 because I don't remember anything about it.
- Thanks to reading the flashbacks Keiichi had at the toy store (before my seven-time quitting point ;_;), reading the doll get scene was... enlightening at how completely subtle and masterful Ryukishi is. There's not a whiff of something done wrong initially, but after getting the 'between the lines' read later... yeah, I can definitely see, and got a chill as the cicadas perked up at that simple moment of Mion laughing.
- Also, immediately reminded of how Ryu07 just takes... ordinary, simple conversations and makes them into weapons. The casual doll gift? Not unlike a white horse that never came. Dismissal.
- Is there a version of seacats for Higurashi? I'd love to read some long and detailed synopses or opinions of each individual chapter in each episode. Just finished the 'Sympathy' game and I want to read reactions to that! It was so good realizing just how important the innocuous moments in Umineko were that I want to know how much more there was to Keiichi understanding his friends worse than Battler and dressing up as a maid in the end.
- Conspiratorial theory: The only reason they go to Angel Mort in the first place is because Keiichi came home in a cute maid outfit that made dad think of girls in cute maid outfits, and so that's how Keiichi meets Shion because Mion dressed him in a maid outfit (XL PREPPED) and planned this as revenge for not giving her girly self a doll after she helped him win his game and it went all according to keikaku! of death?
- "I want to believe that [his father's incoherent rambling in awkward situations] won't be genetic..." Oh, poor dumb Keiichi.
- Poor Shion. Getting all of Kei's evil pervy revenge.... o_o.... O_O.... I-Is this... why Shion acts the way she does when she meets Mion? It's not out of meanness, it's... the way she thinks Keiichi talks to her sister and she's lampooning him?!!?!?!?!?!
- ...Damn, Keiichi. You are flirting hard with Shion and you don't even know you're doing it.
- 'That was a long trip to the art room. He probably came up with a new artpiece when he was sitting on the can.' - Need Arria reactions for just these restaurant scenes. XD
- Filled customer card, calling her the new waitress... ohh Keiichi-Dad....
- Reading again now, I really like how they cut up the episode. There are just slice of life chunks with a good beginning, middle, and end, and Keiichi says a few things in narration and then there's a pause and the two black bars fade across the screen for episode end. And those last few lines? Pure and innocent and definitely not something to think about more at all and get to the nugget of what's really happened outside Keiichi's dumb perspective and won't cause groans or even shudders for what's to come because Keiichi is an ass...umer.
- 'It's rumored that Chie-sensei has devoted her life to curry.' I thought it was meat jelly.
- 'I'm also really good at cooking! Especially Chinese food!' "...Keiichi, boiling something and pouring it into a bowl doesn't count as cooking." - I didn't know Chinese and Irish had so much in common ^_^
- Keiichi's dealmaking with his two classmates... theme of switcheroos and behind-the-scenes dealmaking going on elsewheres?
- Keiichi's a cheat, they know he's a cheat, and are doing something to his stew while Rika uses her siren powers to occupy his attention. Pew pew.
-Yay, Keiichi spine chill! ...Okay, yay during happy game fun time.
- Mion is just so good and pushing the best/worst out of Keiichi... it's going to suck soon ;_;

Spent last few hours browsing my steam library not playing anything. Finally relented and went to play Higurashi Episode 2 again.

Loads into the restaurant where Axe-crazy is telling me I wronged Mion, but I have zero idea how, and she's really really passive aggressive about my idiocy that I don't understand, and there will be crazy Furude hijinks chasing the men out... and then there will be the part where I quit every time when Mion or Shion blasts Shion or Mion and its the worst.

46. Beat a game that features historical events or people

Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends

- Wei > Jin >>> Wu > Shu

First started back in January/February once I got a new graphics card capable of playing it. I struggled through the Shu campaign because I liked the characters most in the Tutorial, not really realizing that Wei Wu Shu Jin is the best order for story purposes. Holy **** was I confused 90% of the time on what was going on. I also wasn't a fan of the map layouts or how quickly I would get curbstomped 95% of the way through a mission with not much effort to one or two guys who decided to cut my life down to nothing with two attacks. And every time I would start getting a handle on a character or got some good weapons to use, the next map would have three entirely new guys with minimal levels and almost always nothing good to equip. I also asked on Discord after beating Shu (Guan Yu is amazing; and Shangjiang is my only 150 level character thanks to ambition mode) what would constitute beating the game and they said all four main campaigns. I gave up midway through Wu and only sporadically played since, with more and more frustrations.

Well, turns out my biggest problem wasn't the game but my monitor. See, my old monitor I had for ten to fifteen years and though it has served me well, its old ratio wasn't doing me any favors with most new releases. I splurged on a brand new monitor over the summer and now can actually read what things weapons can do, can understand the minimap better, and its not a cramped mess. Such a simple solution.

Still, the game is not a favorite. Dragon Quest Heroes was a lot more fun for MUSOU, and Crosscode actually gave me more of a thrill for running through hordes of bad guys and racking up that combo bonus. Ambition Mode is excellent even though I took way too long actually getting to the meat of subjugation. I enjoy a good deal of the characters and voice acting, and I love a lot of the outfits. Like, costuming in this game is just hilarious and amazing and beautiful, as are the oversized or floating or unexpected weapons. The characters themselves are visual treats.

And now that it's over, I like the Rashomon-style storylines where every clan has a different perspective to the same events. Cao Cao was an evil bastard in Shu and Wu, but I absolutely loved following him in Wei.

This is a game I'm still learning to love. I think I'll keep playing it now and again, if only so Han Dang isn't forgotten.

13. Beat a WRPG

Planescape: Torment

- I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's watching the first episode of the newest season late at night, maybe it's the song while talking to The Transcendant One, maybe it's the messaging and changing nature of a man, maybe it's the confrontation itself, but for some reason, that song which I have not heard in likely two or three years wormed its way into my head as soon as I went upon that roof and confronted my mortality. It seems fitting, too, for defeating my past and trying to set the planes right with my final actions as an immortal being, arriving in hell to carry on fighting.

Also, that final scene? Angel. "Let's get to work."

Seriously, a very good game. I was touched by the sheer amount of characterization, depth, and care taken for all but the most minor and generic of characters. The quests were complex enough to need time spent figuring them out, yet simple enough that they can be done quickly if you come across an answer to the solution right away or have confidence in your choices of dialogue. The worlds were varied enough though I would've liked to have spent more time exploring new planes, or at the very least have Curst and The Hive feel more different in texture. I felt like I was just in a suburb and not a place for the worst peoples.

It was a very good game, one I may or may not play again years from now. I did check out what they had for other endings than what I got and... well, there's not much differentiation enough to try at that again. The journey there was excellent though.

Hoping to be done by the end of November.

Current Plans:

WRPG - Planescape: Torment. Tried a few times earlier this year, never got into it. Finally got into it this week, but I'm struggling now that the world's opened up more. Might fall back on playing something from the 2000s to move Witcher.

Historical - Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends. I hated this game back in February. I still kind of hate it, but Wei campaign has been much more fun than Liu Bei's and the Sun clan. And I get superinvested in Ambition grinding to the detriment of my sanity. Could always put Terranigma here if I were to break out another '90s game.

Supernatural - Trails of Cold Steel. Soon. Maybe.

Romance - Stardew Valley. Or Monster Prom is I play another M game, or another sports game and move Mario Superstar.

Oh hai, me.

33. Beat a game with a robot/artificial lead

Crosscode

- Highly recommend playing this. There's still at least one quest and a post-game still to be implemented, but the entire experience is absolutely incredible as it is.

It's an Action RPG. Skill trees, equipment, combat styles, lots and lots of slashing and shooting and dodging and blocking with an emphasis on timing and chaining and attacks of opportunity and strategy. Every enemy has different attack patterns or specialties, and more than a few at once can get pretty overwhelming if you don't have the equipment, levels, partners, or knowledge to deal with them. Bosses are very fun, and even running around fighting low level enemies again just to collect loot can be entertaining with how swiftly you can dispatch them (and still may get killed due to recklessness).

It's a Puzzle Platformer. Every overworld map and town hub has multiple paths you can go with plenty of wayward islands to hop, cliffs to find a way to climb, switches to figure out how to get to, quests to endeavor, and chests to beat yourself up when you spend hours trying to figure out what screen to come from or what sequence of jumps could get you there... when the answer is literally not far off and just requires you to notice that you could've easily walked to it the entire time and you just feel silly. Um, yes, and it's just a lot of collectibles to get if you want them. Figuring out the landscape and how to get places is tons of fun, especially unlocking paths.

It's has Zelda Dungeons. Hi, Lea! The dungeons are massive complex structures with lots of puzzle sequences. Hell, maybe Lufia II might be more apt for its puzzle structure. Every dungeon has an element attached to it which you get late in the dungeon to get through the final, hardest sequences. Bosses are tied to those puzzles and elements to beat, but it never becomes simple and formulaic.

It's a Character-driven Story. Lea is the main character and she's a mute amnesiac. You'd think that wouldn't make for a solid main character, but holy **** she is amazing. Her expressiveness, her sass, her fears, her cheers, those mindbreaking moments, those dreams, every interaction she has with her friends and her rivals... The world is a fully realized with as great cast. At the end, I was even reminded of a LARPing group and how each character feels a lot like someone I know in real life. That was really cool and unexpected.

So, yeah, definitely definitely play it.

26. Beat a game with revenge as a central theme

Doki Doki Literature Club

- Third game of the day! I meant to finish it quite some time ago, but didn't get around to it. Load it up, and like West of Loathing, was a lot closer to the very end than I had realized. Loaded in, Monika was deleted, and the endgame scenes happened until final deletion. First got onto Doki Doki from watching a Twitch streamer narrating it as it happened, and now want to watch her stuff again.

10. Beat a game made by a director/composer/artist/etc that you like

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

- Summer sale purchase for two reasons: fun RPG with fishing minigame & Joe Madrueira. I grew up in the 90s, and I was into comics at exactly the time Joey Mad was drawing Uncanny X-Men. I still remember his drawings super fondly. I love his cartoonishly exaggerated slightly Anime-ish bodies especially with the advent of digital coloring and the bright flashy colors of the X-Men, and just remember lots of his things as some of my definitive X-Men looks. I still wish there was more short hair Storm with the two long white bangs and her purple uniform. I want more Joseph and Rogue and Gambit. He made noseless Wolverine actually cool kind of.

But about the game, it was a lot of fun. There's a cool amount of strategy in combat and who you bring to fights, and plenty of puzzles in dungeons and out that actually require pen and paper to keep track of which is fun. The rewards for doing sidestuff are excellent, and the characters have a great camaraderie. Also, fishing is so much fun. I didn't need to do it, but I spent too much time fishing instead of advancing the plot which is a problem I have (as seen with Dragon Quest XI with forging and bestiary and equipment book). I'm glad I've put it off for a few months or else I'd still be running around collecting everything when the end came rather quickly.

I will say this as a mark against it. End of game spoilers: As difficult as the final boss wanted to be if I weren't max level with way too many perk points, I was disappointed with the final dungeon literally being a long hallway, a boss battle, end credits, and a future game tease with the real final boss I was expecting to fight right after.

Maybe I got spoiled by
DQXI SPOILERS Mordegon's gauntlet.

Four games down, one day, six spots left to fill.

Move Ringside Hero to 22. Fighting.

23. Beat a sports game

Mario Superstar Baseball

- Wish I had my old save cartridge nearby to load up the file on the hardest difficulty with at least 70% of the stars gotten, but alas. Beat it on Easy, didn't even really dilly around for stars and characters gets, just go in and take out Bowser and win.

If I did have a cartridge with some save space available, I may have gone searching for Home Run King from 2003 and tried for the full 162 game season. I fondly remember getting to about July once and Troy Clark of all people was my best player with a batting average around .650.

Moved Final Fantasy X to 37. Backlog

14. Beat a JRPG

Dragon Quest XI

- Holy hell. First off, congrats KCF and ArkOfTurus! Wish I kept up my pace in the first half of the year so I could second list with ya, Ark (39/52 in July, three months later it's 43/52).

Dragon Quest XI is an amazing game with a rich story and fun as hell sidestuff. If I didn't spend 60% of my time forging endlessly, fighting over and over for rare loot, and actually pushing forward with the actual game - for purposes of this list - I'd likely have finished... two weeks ago? 176 hours logged. That's not necessary, especially with this challenge happening and a large desire to play again with the challenges turned on.

However, it was totally worth it. I'm screaming at myself to go and finish some other games, but all I want to do is play the post-game content and enjoy this comfy but brilliant RPG. Highly recommended, especially for any fans of the series.

I also need to quit playing HotS for a bit. Those hours are eating up time playing other games. I don't have the ten-week cushion I had like back in July.

LOADS OF CHANGES!

Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) --- 18. 3PS -> 17. FPS
Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls --- 50c. -> 18. 3PS
Danganronpa & Rusty Lake Paradise [switch] --- 50a. <-> 25. Horror
Danganronpa 2 & Rusty Lake Hotel [switch] --- 50b. <-> 7. Series

50c. Beat three games in a series

Rusty Lake Roots

- Played 90% of it a long time ago, but got stuck on a puzzle or two and it wouldn't let me continue or something silly. Finally got around to fully beating it, and still loved it more than most of the Cube Escape games. The story works well, but the puzzles are much easier in the episodic format.

Switching a bunch because I don't think I'm gonna get around to another shooter anytime soon, and Ultra Despair Girls can fill that slot.

AHHH!! After an entire month, I'm free! It's time to conquer more games!

36. Replay a game from a long time ago
Chrono Trigger
38/50

- A friend from work gifted me this a week ago, and in-between still playing BattleChasers: Nightwar and Trails of Cold Steel, I finished it up again for the first time in about a decade! I think this is the first time I went through the Black Omen, too. I always can't fathom just how much shorter and smaller the game world is whenever I get to The Time Egg. There are so many memorable moments and places that it always comes as a surprise how much of a machine gun its like hitting all those spots right after another. Maybe a good chunk of it is replaying it, knowing where to go, how to manipulate the treasure chests, and less surprises knowing what's happening. But it's still so weird getting to The End of Time less than a few hours in or fighting Magus at the tenth or so. This feels like a longer game than it really is, and that's a good thing.

Overall, had a really good time again.

Am I really that much in the minority in terms of liking GotG 2 as much as the first? I thought the start was weaker and a lot of the middle (until the arrow scene) but the climax was definitely better to me, and there was a villain who wasn't completely vanilla as well.

I'm in the minority with you. I was so surprised to see it ranked so low on a collective Top 50 (Top 100?) superheroes movie list earlier this year. I thought for sure it'd be much higher.

And I don't think any of the shown comments made any mention of Yondu who was the best part of the movie so screw those rankers.

When it comes to MvGX, yes. My opinions are objectively wrong.

I mean, it's good that you can at least admit that.

Rewatch the dang season and you'll see.

Maybe YOU should rewatch it and realize that, much like your Cook Islands write-up, it's a bland season that doesn't hold up a second time around, because once you know all the blindsides that are gonna happen, the characters are flat and not worth investing it.

Yul is amazing.

3. Beat a game released between 2000-2009

The Witcher Enhanced Edition

- This was an excellent tale. Good characters, excellent tale of intrigue, very fun hero to play, excellent use of choices with neutral being a legitimate option for once, and a pretty solid setting that was easy to get lost in. I very much enjoyed figuring out the mysteries and plots behind Vizima's troubles. Trying to figure out what would be the best methods of dealing with situations, trying to take the harder roads nearly always... what a ride. The lore and intrigue dialed down in the final hours, but by then it was a hard push to face down the villains and choose who Geralt was in the end.
